10 Singapore Childhood Games to reminisce if you are a 90s kid

Do you remember the innocent times back in primary school in the 1990s/2000s when life is not as complicated now?

Before the era of smartphones with the App Store or Google Play hits all of us, the impression of the singapore childhood games was that of simple but fun.

Here are ten of the memorable Singapore childhood games for you to reminisce if you are a 90s kid too!

1. Rubik's Cube

Obtained from Wikimedia Commons

Everyone starts off with a cube ( 3X3 on each of the 6 sides ) with the 6 colours mixed and the objective of the game is to get a solid colour on each of the 3X3 side.

Till now I could still not solve it oops.

2. Uno

Obtained from flickr

A card game that can build (or break) friendships! The first player to get rid of their cards is the winner and he/she has to shout UNO at the last card otherwise there will be a penalty (more cards!!)

The +4 card for all cards is horrible… unless you have a skip or reverse card 😤

3. Heart Attack

Obtained from Pixabay

In groups of more than 3, players would play rock-paper-scissors with each other and at each round, the loser has to put one hand down and the player with one hand at the bottom of the hands stack will withdraw that hand and compete with the winner for the nexr round. Everyone’s hands will eventually be stacked down except for one winner with two hands free. He/she would then call HEART ATTACK and hit onto the stack of hands and the other players “siam” (or avoid) getting hit.

This game surely lives up to its name because I always got a mini "heart attack" at the end when I could not “siam”(avoid) fast enough.

4. Concentration

“Concentration. Concentration. This is a game of Concentration. …. “

This simple childhood game has this rhythm of claps to follow to and it is indeed a test of how well you can concentrate. Everyone will sit in a circle and each one is tagged with a number. One must pay attention whether their number is called if not, he/she is out of the game. The last one standing is crowned the master of concentration

Back in my primary school, this is more of a girls’ games..

5. Old Maid

The goal is simple: Avoid getting the old maid as your last card.

The looks on each other’s faces when they try to sabo(sabotage) one poor unlucky fellow with the old maid …

6. What time is it, Mr Wolf?

One of my favorite Singapore childhood games!  There will be one person as the “Wolf” and the other players stand a distance away at the home base and they will ask, “ What time is it, Mr Wolf? “. Players would have to move th number of steps between the home base and the “wolf”. When the “wolf” calls “ dinner time “ , he/she gets to run and chase the rest of the players and the rest of the players would try to run back to the home base where it is safe without getting caught by the wolf. The player who got caught by the “wolf” is the next “wolf”.

7.Flag Eraser

Obtained from Pixabay

One of the popular childhood games among the boys. Two person would put in their eraser (It is said the legend is the one with the Singapore Flag) and try to get his/her ‘s on top of the opponent’s.

I used to think the eraser with the Singapore Flag will always win LOL.

8. The splitting game (i do not know the actual name for it)

Two players would stand facing each other with their feet aligned and connected in a line. They will compete with each other through rock-paper-scissors and the winner would put the feet in front of the other , back behind the other feet and the loser has to close up the gap( the feet of both players have to be connected in a line). The loser of the whole game is when they could no longer keep the feet connected in a line.

People who are more flexible are usually at an advantage.

9. Ice and Water

Obtained from Public Domain Pictures

A game that involves a lot of running around. There will be two teams; Ice and water. When the Ice players touch the water players, the water player freeze i.e they could not move around and they have to wait for a fellow water player to tap them before they could move.

10. Hopscotch

A classic game. Draw ten boxes just like the one below.
I like to draw the furthest box as a semi circle :P

Take a small stone(or any small object. I remember that I used my wallet) and throw into a box. Hop through the open boxes to retrieve the item.

You could play these childhood games with your friends despite how we are all old now cause you know .... young at heart!
Above are some of popular singapore childhood games that I have played back in my primary school days.  Do let me know what singapore childhood games you have played!
